Having travelled from Victoria to South Australia then back to Victoria, we just had to squeeze in one more State. So we free camped in the bush near Wentworth and had a look at the sights including the famous Perri Sandhills out of Wentworth New South Wales. Tyson enjoyed his trip away in the Kombi and was very excited when he caught a good sized fish in the Murray River. Now it was time to head back and check out the Cammokombi after its 2500 kilometer first trip for 2007. I guess the ultimate compliment coming from 9 year old Tyson was what he asked me regarding the Kombi...

"Grandpa, when you die, can I have the Kombi?"

With that sobering thought I end this Blog.

The road back East

We picked a different set of roads to get back as we headed for one of our favourite camping spots on the Murray River at Wentworth. A flat tyre was the only hic cup along the way. The RAA guy drives a 62 Kombi with a 1600 engine. I raved about the Kombi Club to him. Once we set up camp it was in the river for a cool off and a relaxing time. We enjoyed a visit from a local girl and her horse. As I type this I am sitting in the Wentworth Library with my laptop plugged in and recharging. I have just enjoyed a very large Chicken Schnitzel at the Sturt Hotel and it only cost $7.00. Tyson tucked into an eaqually large plate of Bangers and Eggs for only $6.00 for kids meals. Now its off to see the sights of Wentworth including the Junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers, Some Paddle steamers in the River Port, and then out bush to the famous Perri Sand Hills. So check back soon for more blog and pics. Its another hot day so Im hanging out for a dip in the river.

After enjoying a night of laughs singalongs with guitar and drum music (and a few drinks) it was time to take the kombis and go have some fun on remote tracks. "Gee's I love camping!!!!!!" The

UHF radios proved themselves as we were all able to keep in constant contact and keep the laughs flowing as we drove. After a fun filled and adventurous day it was time to say farewell to our new found friends and be on our way on the return trip. What a fantastic time! It was well worth the drive from Victoria to South Australia to catch up with all those K.C.ers I have been talking to online. Now we all know each other. Its funny though how a K.C. username can change into a nickname. Everyone kept calling me Cammo. Now my Grandson thinks its cool to call me Cammo. Ha! He loved his time with all the other Kombi Kids. As we drive off into the setting sun.....ooops wrong way! Blame the navigator!

Kombi Convoy

Woohoo!! Our first Kombi Convoy in South Australia. Here we are at a roadside stop. What an awesome sight seeing a line of Kombis on the road. Boy did we draw some attention by spectators.

Day Three

After a roadside campsite last night we had an early start and had a picnic lunch in Murray Bridge. We then made the last dash to Ruth's place in the Adelaide Hills. In the morning we will all head off to the Saddle up meeting point then its Kombi Convoy down to Rapid Bay. So Photos to follow future posts.

Day Two

Day two took us to Portland for lunch and then to the Petrified Forrest coastline. Then on towards Mount Gambia. Got a flat tyre on the trailer about 25 klm out of Mt. G. I was just dialing RAA when a car load of young Christian females pulled up and offered assistance. As I didn't feel like waiting for hours for RAA I decided to take them up on thier offer. They said they felt as if God had directed them to help us. I think God drives a Kombi! It turns out one of the girls was Ex Army and she used to change truck tyres so she was in the right place at the right time. We were soon on our way and waiting for the new tyre in Mt. G. As it has been total fire ban we are eating cold fare but enjoying it. More blogging as I can later.

Sleeping Experiment

As we want a fairly quick camp set up for on the road travelling we experimented with blocking off the gap inbetween the two front seats and putting a piece of cut to size foam across the front seat. One instant grandson sized bed. Speaking of which... He has counted 4 Kombis on the road so far!

1st campsite

We made camp at Saw Pit Gully free camping area. It has a brand new enviro toilet and very large camping area sporting new pine picnic tables. We had one bit of excitement as one camper turned up with his trailer wheels on fire. He had forgotten to take the manual handbrake off at his last stop. Fire was soon put out and did not spread so that was good. The area has lots of wildlife.

We are on our way. It is 40+ degrees in the kombi and the engine hates it. We are stopping lots and lots to allow it to cool down.

Surprize for Tyson

This is my grandson Tyson. He has been helping Grandpa to do a few jobs on the Cammokombi. What he doesn't know yet is that his Mum and Dad are letting him go on the trip to S.A. He will be very excited when he finds out as he doesn't know he is going yet. Tyson helped check the tyre pressures today on the kombi and trailer.

Hi there,

Here we are at the beginning of 2007. Another year and another set of adventures to begin. The first adventure and trip begins online at www.kombiclub.com I saw the words "camping trip" in one of the forums on the website. The Adelaide group are organizing a weekend camp. It sounded like a lot of fun so I decided to make this my first adventure of the year and drive over from Melbourne. So it was repack the Kombi and the trailer and fill up the water containers in readiness for the trip. The next few days will be fixing up little things like holes in the insect screens and small jobs like that. Departure date is the 10th of January.
